English Literature

What is English Literature?

Most English Language students at DLD also study Literature because combining the two subjects helps both. English Literature is an enjoyable and stimulating subject, which will develop your analytical skills as you study a range of literary texts. It is essential for those who may want to study English in the VIth form and is very useful for those considering Arts subjects or Modern Languages.

What will I study?

You will read a selection of plays, novels, poems and short stories for coursework and examination. These texts are likely to include works by Arthur Miller, Ernest Hemingway and a selection of poetry.

You will discuss the books in class and learn how to interpret and write about the texts, their characters and themes, and how language, structure and form contribute to the meaning of texts. You will relate the books to their society, culture and to literary traditions. As well as developing these literary and academic skills English Literature should encourage your enjoyment of reading of all kinds.

How is it assessed?

Exam Unit 1 and 2              2hrs 15mins                            70%

  1. Drama (Post 1914)
  1. Poetry. Prose (Post 1914).

Coursework:                                                                       30%

  1. Three essays on drama/poetry and prose published before 1914. (Including Shakespeare)

  1. Must include comparison between texts and the exploration the historical and cultural influences and/or social contexts

What do I need?

It is great if you are a passionate reader of literature in your spare time, but even if you are not you can still do well and there is much to enjoy in the course. Discussion, debate and close analysis of the novels, poems and plays will help you explore the underlying meanings in literary texts: discovering how people's lives, experiences and beliefs can be reflected in literature, and how they might surprisingly connect with or challenge your own thoughts and feelings is very enjoyable. Seeing what you didn't see before is always fun.
