What is English?

English GCSE is an essential qualification which helps you to develop your ability to express yourself, your ideas, opinions and understanding, and to develop the reading and writing skills used everyday in school and in life. The course builds upon what you have learnt before, and supports and challenges you to improve and learn with new material: it is fast-paced and hard work but is all the more enjoyable for being so.

What will I study?

You will learn how to analyse a wide variety of different forms of writing, from non-fiction and media texts to literary works, including Shakespeare.  Emphasis will be placed on helping you to develop the quality of your writing. You will be taught how to write essays which are well structured and articulate and you will practise the related skills of planning and note taking. Creative writing and Speaking and Listening are enjoyable parts of the coursework.
