DLD College London, one of London's most distuinguished colleges in the UK is 80 years old this year.

Since A Level results day, last month, the Council For Independent Further Education (CIFE) have reported a 123% increase in the amount of traffic to their website, compared to the same time last year. CIFE have also reported a 20% upsurge in telephone calls to their office this year.

Notwithstanding annual assaults from the media and others, the A-level exam is in rude health. A-level grew out of the old 'Higher School Certificate' which was the gateway into a university education for a small percentage of school leavers. Leaving aside what used to constitute a university education compared to what constitutes a degree programme today, the fact remains that the A-level offered, at first, a highly exclusive and rigid assessment model.

Confusion and anxiety reign amongst 15 - 16 year old school children at the moment, as they are forced into potentially career breaking decisions at a ridiculously early age.

According to an article in the New York Times this week, new research indicates that taking a test is not just a passive mechanism for assessing how much you've learnt, but that it actually helps people learn more effectively than a number of other, more traditional studying techniques.
